Basic
Aftercare 101
1a. It is important
that fresh piercings are cleaned twice a day. During the healing
process, secretions from the piercing will dry on the jewellery
and around the entrance and exit points of the piercing. To soften
the secretions, rinse the piercing site and the jewellery with warm
water. Following this we recommend using an all natural aftercare
product such as “MAGIC DRAGON MIST”
(available at WestcoastPiercing.com).
Spray on the site, gently moving
it back and forth and allow it to air dry. This can be repeated
up to 3 times a day. MAGIC DRAGON MIST can be used on all NON-ORAL
PIERCINGS, and other types of abrasions such as cuts, bites, friction
burn, facial blemishes and sexual chaffing.
1b: Our second
recommendation is to use another natural product such as “TEA
TREE SOAP” (available at WestcoastPiercing.com), and thirdly
a surgical scrub such as Hibitane which can be purchased at any
drug store. If using the soap or surgical scrub, lather the piercing
and gently move the jewellery back and forth. Rinse after one minute
and again gently move the jewellery back and forth. HYDROGEN PEROXIDE,
BACTINE, RUBBING ALCOHOL, IODINE AND POLYSPORINE SHOULD NOT BE USED
ON BODY PIERCINGS!! Soaps containing deodorants, cold creams, strong
perfume or other additives should also not be used.
2. ORAL PIERCINGS
such as lip, tongue, and cheek: Rinse with “MAGIC DRAGON MIST
ORAL” (available at WestcoastPiercing.com) or Listerine (the
nasty yellow original works best) antiseptic mouthwash twice a day
- once in the morning and once at night. For added oral hygiene:
dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in warm water and gargle a couple times
a day. Rinse your mouth with bottled water after everything you
eat or smoke. Yogurt, beer and oral sex should be avoided for the
first week as they can cause yeast infections in the mouth.
3. Oral contact
with or the handling of new piercings can cause infections and should
be avoided. Although genital piercings do not prohibit sex during
the healing process, men can promote good hygiene by wearing a condom
during intercourse to minimize risk of infection.
4. Minor soreness
may be experienced when some piercings are new and healing. With
proper aftercare, infections in piercings are rare; however, should
you show signs of infection (such as the piercing site becoming
very sore and/or excessive redness or discharge occurring for an
extended period of time) we suggest you consult your piercing practitioner
or a physician as soon as possible. Do come in for a consultation,
prior to removing the jewellery as removal could cause the site
to heal trapping the bacteria inside, thus making it worse.
5. CAUTION: Removing
the jewellery too soon (before the area surrounding the piercing
is toughened), the inner membrane of the piercing can be torn easily
when the new jewellery is inserted. Body jewellery can be removed
and changed once the piercing is healed. Clean new jewellery with
rubbing alcohol to ensure it is germ-free, before placing into an
old site.
6. HEALING TIMES:
Ear lobes, tongue, nostril and genital membranes require approximately
two months healing - with jewellery in at all times. All other piercing
require at least six months of healing. If the jewellery must be
removed for a short period of time, a short piece of monofilament
nylon fishing line the length of the piercing can be inserted. This
will keep the piercing open until the jewellery is reinserted.
